OUR APPROACH
NEUROAFFIRMING TEAM COMMITMENT:
To learn from and embrace neurodivergent folk for who they are.
To support learning for neurotypical and neurodivergent folk to meet in the middle, with an acceptance of accommodations for all, so you can participate in a way that is most comfortable.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
We are committed to learning and embracing a neuroaffirming approach within our therapy practice with the overarching principle that we do not change the person, rather we make accommodations so everyone can participate comfortably.
Led by personal experiences and supported by contemporary practice, we want to create an enabling environment by removing barriers and supporting environmental adaptions that create a healthy and supportive environmental for neurodivergent folk.
We want to do better!
We will:
-
Treat you with the same dignity, curiosity and presumption of competence that you treat all people with.
-
Reframing "problem behaviours" as unmet needs".
-
Discuss neurodivergence openly.
-
Supporting and recognising your strengths.
-
Supporting and exploring the joys of neurodivergence.
-
Honour ALL forms of communication as valid.
-
Continue to learn and evolve our neuroaffirming practice.
We will not:
-
Force eye contact.
-
Force and implement neurotypical social skills.
-
Force ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis) principles of practice.
OUR NAME
"New England Behaviour Support" was developed to accurately describe:
-
The area we provide support to; and
-
What we are most interested in, human behaviour.
behaviour (noun)
/bɪˈheɪvjə/
The way that someone behaves in a particular situation or under particular circumstances.
- Molecular behaviour occurs suddenly without thinking, such as closing your eyes automatically to protect them.
- These behaviours can be observed among many children who have lost a parent or other loved one.
OUR LOGO
The New England Behaviour Support logo represents how we work and what we believe in.
Hand drawn by Chantelle, one branch represents the individual, and the other branches are the support networks around them, who we see as a valuable part of creating supportive environments.
Each branch is unique, and that's okay - because it's okay to be you! We focus our supports on your strengths, interests and abilities.
